Did Prehistoric European Populations Use Drugs? (Part I)

Elisa Guerra Doce
PhD in Prehistory
University of Reading, United Kingdom

Drug use in Europe is an ancient practice that, based on compelling archaeological evidence, dates back to Prehistory. Archaeobotanical remains of psychoactive plants have been unearthed at several archaeological sites, drug alkaloids have been detected in prehistoric artifacts and their metabolites in human bones, and various ritual artistic representations incorporate images of psychoactive plants. All this suggests that prehistoric European communities used psychoactive substances in ritual contexts, as evidenced by their recurring presence in tombs and ceremonial sites.

MAIN MAGIC PLANTS: THE ALTERNATIVE TO THE BLACK MARKET

Educational content written from a harm reduction perspective and with respect for individual freedom. It is not a substitute for advice from a healthcare professional and is not intended to encourage or condemn any drug use. The author merely translates traditional herbal knowledge for the general public. While we are confident in the accuracy of the data provided, we assume no responsibility for the potential use or abuse of these herbs, as individual sensitivity varies and excesses have consequences. Remember that all plants and extracts, especially pharmaceutical ones due to their higher concentration, can cause harm if used incorrectly or abused. Herbs and extracts should always be used with the same precautions as medicinal drugs: pregnant women, the sick, and those with mental health conditions should consult a specialist before trying new substances.
